What Information Do I Need for a Family Law Consultation?

If you’re facing a Bossier City family law conflict and you’ve been unable to resolve it through your own methods you may have set up a consultation with an attorney.  This is a wise decision because it can provide you some guidance about the merits of your case from an experienced attorney.  The more that you are prepared for this consultation, the more you are likely to get out of it.

A first consultation doesn’t mean that you have to retain the services of a Bossier City family lawyer.  It’s an introduction to the law firm and your chance to get a few basic questions answered.  Coming in with a clear case overview and any relevant documents, however, can let you make the most of the meeting opportunity.  If you have a consultation scheduled, sit down and list out the key issues that are being contested.  In a divorce, this might include child custody, child support, property division, and spousal support.

If there are assets that will be divided during the divorce, make a comprehensive list of all of them.  Since this process can take some time, it’s recommended that you start it early on and continue adding to the list as you uncover or remember there.  The more thorough you are, the more informed your lawyer will be once you hire him or her.

Write out a list of questions you have for your potential attorney.  It’s reasonable that you could get several of them answered during your initial consultation.  Bring a notepad to keep track of what the attorney says and so that you can review your notes later on to help you make a decision.  This can also be used to record your next steps and make sure you follow your attorney’s advice.
